What is Street Photography?

It has been described as "a genre of photography that records everyday life in public places"

Street photographers are following in the footsteps of painters in the 19th. century such as Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, Henry de Toulouse - Lautrec and more recently and closer to home Adolphe Valette and L.S. Lowry. The impulse to photograph and document people in public gathered pace in with the 20th. century when Henri Cartier - Bresson, known for his candid photography, led the way for many others to follow.
