Light and Time

I have been privileged to be able to take time to enjoy and to observe my surroundings and to capture the moment in the light and time recorded in these images, I hope you will find a quite moment to enjoy them.

A photographer living in Saddleworth in the North West of England. Starting my journey in photography when I was 14, I joined a local photographic society and with the help of my brother and a family friend learned the elements of photography. The real excitement came when I was able to compose an image, shoot it (using film), develop and  enlarge it, watch the finished print appear in a bath of fixer and finally print it. I can still smell the chemicals and feel the excitement on seeing my first print, in black and white, of course. I went on to become a solicitor (lawyer) in the UK, taking photographs from time to time. Retirement has enabled me to devote more time to my passion.

Saddleworth is on the western edge of the Peak District National Park which includes most of the southern parts of the Pennine chain, a range of hills running down the centre of northern England. It is the result of glacial activity so is made up of deep valleys and moorland rising to 542m (1778ft). There are five villages which are only 12 - 15 miles from the centre of Manchester situated on the edge of the Cheshire plain. Greater Manchester has a population of 2.8 million. So there are densely populated areas and wild beautiful exposed untouched parts where four seasons can be present in one day. I hope that I have caught of the essence of those places and people local to me and around the world.

My photography has been influenced by the geography of the region, my personal interests and professional career which brought me into contact with industry and above all people. So the portfolio is wide ranging from lonely rural areas, village and city life, gardens, people, architecture and industry reflecting life in the UK, parts of Europe and North America.

Landscape photography can be a great teacher. It shows the beauty that is in nature and humanity's influence on the environment as well as in structures, art and sculpture, sometimes for the good but often not so. It also shows how powerful nature can be.

My aim:

To portray people and nature in all its forms, humanity's influence on nature and where abandoned and damaged, nature can regain its own.

To recognise the need for harmony by seeing the world from all perspectives, not only ours but those of animals, plants and insects which make their home on our planet.

I hope you enjoy the images.
